PhD candidate
Anique ter Braake

With a background in biology and cardiovascular research, Anique is highly interested in the interplay of vital organs such as the kidney and the vasculature in health and disease. Vascular calcification is a hallmark of chronic kidney disease and the main cause of cardiovascular related mortality in these patients. Magnesium, an important cation involved in many cellular processes, is able to prevent vascular calcification. During her PhD, Anique aims to elucidate the mechanisms my which magnesium prevents vascular calcification at the level of the vascular smooth muscle cell, which is known to transdifferentiate from a contractile phenotype towards an osteoblast-like phenotype.
